Modified Health Behavior Assessment and Intervention Services CPT Codes for 2020

The ABA Coding Coalition has learned recently that a number of CPT codes for health behavior assessment and intervention services (96158 – 96171) have been modified for 2020. Those codes are for services to identify and address psychological, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal factors important to the assessment, treatment, or management of physical health problems. The patient’s primary diagnosis must be physical in nature and the focus of the assessment and intervention is on factors complicating the medical conditions and treatments. The codes describe assessment and intervention services to improve the patient’s health and wellbeing utilizing psychological and/or psychosocial procedures designed to ameliorate specific disease-related problems. They do not represent any changes to the CPT® codes used to report adaptive behavior (ABA) services and are not to be reported concurrently with the ABA assessment or treatment codes (97151 – 97158).
